Thamires Monteiro

Thamires Monteiro is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt representing Checkmat, known for her relentless pressure-passing style and exceptional results in both gi and no-gi competitions. Throughout her career, Thamires has earned recognition for her dominant and aggressive game, establishing herself as one of the top competitors in the lightweight division.
As a brown belt, Thamires secured a major victory by winning the IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, and her consistent performances have led to victories in international tournaments such as Subversive, a premier team-based event. As a black belt, Thamires has risen in the ranks, being ranked 6th in the world in the IBJJF No-Gi rankings for the 2021/2022 season, 3rd in the world for the 2022/2023 season, and is currently ranked 5th for the 2023-2024 season, further solidifying her place among the elite in jiu-jitsu. Very nice people, kid-centered (for the younger age groups) and they are great with our kids. Nice balance of discipline, strategy, skill development, and fun! Our children love it. Very clean facility. Highly recommend for children. (They seem very knowledgeable for adults as well, I'm just not taking the sessions, so the review is focused on my children's experience).

My first day here coach hector and Andre made me feel extremely welcomed. I took longer than others to understand the techniques but they showed alot of patience and guided me through them. There was never a time where I felt unsafe or uncomfortable. I highly recommend this place for people looking to start their martial arts journey. They also offer amazing kickboxing classes. The class schedules make it easy to do it consecutively which helps out with of a busy schedule!

I love this place!! Started off at the Downey location but come here often since it’s closer to home! Professor Hector is the best coach to learn from his technique and his demeanor in class make this school one of the best Jiu Jitsu schools for anybody looking to roll at any level. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking to learn Jiu Jitsu or just stay in shape!

What a time to be a part of a family. I'd like to recognize this gym as one that is head and shoulders above the rest. My daughter who began at 5 years old made me realize how precious and humble we should all be. After months of being a member of this gym, I feel compelled to leave a review. Hands down one of the premier BJJ gyms! Why? It's the culture that Hector and Eduardo create. It's all about culture! I appreciate the little things that create culture in a gym such as Academy. Charlie : refreshing perspective of BJJ and one of the best in the industry. There is never any notion of "we are better than you". Professor Andre: the best of the best. I can't say enough on how Andre gives his entire life to this, he humbles me and my daughter and I appreciate how he brings us together. Professor Hector: he has provided such leadership to this gym. He and professor Eduardo are one of a kind. Professor Eduardo: he sets the standard of a humble culture in the gym: there was a boy in my daughter's class who called another classmate a "loser". Eduardo corrected the boy immediately and respectfully in front of everyone, including parents / in a fashion that made me so proud to be there. Professor Andy and the Checkmat team regularly visit to teach humbled students.. I'm honored to have been there for the grand opening. I'm honored to have my daughter there and I'm so humbled to be a part of the gym as an adult. I appreciate the other gyms in La Habra and Downey that support this family! Other tactical reasons why this gym is unique: - No Gi & Gi classes - 6AM classes - 8:30PM classes - Kickboxing - More competition time - Safety #1 As of this posting registration is $25 but with a free T shirt. They have once a week membership and an unlimited membership. My guess is that they will tweak things as they go but it's already perfect.

Had the opportunity to check out this location today and was absolutely amazing. My kids enjoyed the class and hopefully look forward to them joining. The facility was very clean and extremely nice. We felt extremely welcomed from the moment we walked in. Thank very much to Eduardo and Andre. They were amazing! I've been eyeing this place since they started putting their sign up. They finally opened and my family and I came in for a trial. I was immediately greeted with warm welcomes. We took a trial class and decided to sign up. Keep in mind my kids have been doing jiu jitsu for about 4 to 5 years already. The coaches were easy going but definitely did challenged them step by step. I love their methodology where they start out easy and slowly increase the resistance so they can apply their learning in an increasingly challenging environment. I also signed up and planned on attending both their Muay Thai and BJJ program. Other gym would have cost twice as much. Highly recommended.
